Commitment to safety sways national Newpower contract

15 April, 2009

A demonstrable commitment to a Safety All Ways environment has helped Newpower secure the contract to maintain Shell New Zealand’s retail and commercial fuel outlet network.

Awarded by Johnson Controls, the NZD$650k p.a. contract involves the electrical maintenance of over 200 Shell retail sites, 100 truck stops and 10 Marina locations.

This contract win also comes on the back of a contract renewal secured earlier this year with Chevron New Zealand, to provide electrical service and maintenance to its Caltex branded retail and commercial fuel network. The two go a long way to demonstrating a leading capability in a service sector where exceptional safety standards are to the fore.

Newpower enjoys a strong affiliation with the petroleum sector, with BP and Mobil amongst their stable of industry customers.

Newpower Electrical has been awarded a NZ$12 million (A$10 million) rail contract for ONTRACK

15 March, 2009

Newpower Electrical has been awarded a NZ$12 million (A$10 million) rail contract for ONTRACK, which owns and manages New Zealand’s rail network on behalf of the Government. The project will be delivered by Newpower Electrical, with support from O’Donnell Griffin.

The three-year contract will start immediately and involves upgrading the overhead electric rail lines in the Wellington region ahead of the planned introduction of new passenger trains starting in 2010.

ONTRACK looks after 4,000 kilometres of railway track as well as signals, bridges and tunnels, and also controls the safe movement of trains around New Zealand.

The contract was secured by Norfolk’s New Zealand electrical business Newpower Electrical, which operates throughout New Zealand from a network of offices in major capital cities and regional locations. Newpower will be supported by its Australian partner, O’Donnell Griffin.

David Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Norfolk’s Electrical & Communications division, said Newpower will carry out much of the ONTRACK contract work at night and weekends, within restricted hours, so daytime train schedules will not be interrupted.

Mr Lee said: “Newpower will work closely with Norfolk’s leading Australian electrical rail infrastructure unit O’Donnell Griffin, utilising O’Donnell Griffin’s recognised expertise and proven record in rail infrastructure work.

“The ONTRACK contract shows how Norfolk can bring its collective skills and experience to key projects internationally,” said Mr Lee. “We value this contract very highly and look forward to building a strong relationship with ONTRACK.”

In 2007, O’Donnell Griffin formed Australia’s first independent specialist rail division – O’Donnell Griffin Rail.

“The formation of the division recognises Norfolk’s growing strength and expertise in the rail sector,” said Mr Lee.

Some of the key projects so far undertaken by Norfolk in the rail sector include:

  • The electrical infrastructure for Australia’s largest new rail line – the $1.56 billion Southern Suburbs Rail Project in Perth, Western Australia
  • The Regional Fast Rail project in Victoria
  • The South Improvement Alliance rail and signalling upgrades from Sydney to Melbourne

The Newpower project win in New Zealand follows O’Donnell Griffin’s announcement in August 2008 of a A$14 million signalling project as part of the Wodonga Rail Bypass Project in Victoria.

On 5 December 2008, O’Donnell Griffin and alliance partners Laing O’Rourke and Connell Wagner, signed the contract for the RailCorp Program Alliance (RPA) project valued at up to $1 billion. O’Donnell Griffin’s component of the alliance contract is estimated to be worth up to $400 million over the next five years.

Progressive negotiations reap rewards

28th April, 2008

Newpower has secured the enormously valuable Progressive safety upgrade contract.

With the contract spanning electrical upgrades and maintenance across almost 150 supermarkets outside Auckland, Newpower puts a value on the primary business at well over NZD$4m, but equally important is the contracts positioning of Newpower in respect of future supermarket electrical refurbishment work throughout the country.

The additional supermarket electrical refurbishment work this project could bring in might, in the long term, prove to be just as valuable again in terms of dollars. The contract provides Newpower with an excellent foothold in this particular environment and demonstrates our capability and dependable performance within this industry.

The negotiations with Progressive and the effort involved in winning this contract has established an important baseline that can be used to develop good working relationships with its internal teams and customer safety programmes.

Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant
October 23, 2007

Staff of Newpower Electrical Auckland have now completed installation and commissioning work for Watercare trials of the new bio-solids dryer at the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Watercare began a three-year trial period producing dried bio-solids in early 2006, using an experimental ‘Flo-Dry’ dryer and other processing equipment, all installed by Newpower Electrical. The dryer is designed to remove more of the water from the moist end-product of the waste treatment process, making it easier to handle and transport and killing any remaining bacteria and the smells they produce.

The ‘Flo-Dry’ dryer produces up to 500 kilograms of dried bio-solids per hour, resulting in a product that is similar to dry compost than can be packaged and sold to consumers as fertiliser. Six Newpower Electrical staff were involved in the installation of the dryer, a job that involved working in a hazardous area for approximately 1200 man-hours.

Newpower Installing First Protrack Systems
October 23, 2007

Newpower Electrical has been selected by Livestock Improvement to complete the installation, project management and commissioning work involved in launching their new Protrack farm automation system.

Protrack is a computerised livestock tracking system designed to make milking of dairy cows easier, provide mechanical and accurate drafting of animals, and facilitate automated feeding. The system utilises computerised ear-tags to identify animals, and uses a database program to maintain a detailed history of each animal. Mobile computer display screens aid with customised programing and provide access to data.

Newpower Electrical Business Manager Alastair Gee says the first of the new Protrack systems are being installed by Newpower on around 60 New Zealand dairy farms, including properties in Taranaki, Manawatu, North and West Canterbury and Southland. Livestock Improvement is offering farmers two types of Protrack system. Vector is the standard system, while Vantage offers a slightly more expensive solution with extra features. Both systems can be installed in new facilities or retro-fitted into rotary-platform or herringbone dairy sheds.

Yealand Estate Winery
October 23, 2007

Newpower Electrical has recently won the contract to upgrade Yealand Estate Winery. Yealand Estate is the largest vineyard in private ownership in New Zealand and represents a new direction for the group. Newpower will provide the design and installation of electrical

systems for a new green field winery at the estate. A key reason for Newpower’s success in the $1.4 million job was their ability to offer eco friendly alternatives. The project is due for completion in April next year.

Tasman District Council Project
October 23, 2007

Newpower Electrical has won a $500,000 contract with Tasman District Council for the upgrade of 22 wastewater and freshwater pumping stations throughout the Marlborough region.

Newpower’s Nelson branch is responsible for the design-build of the switchboards, writing the telemetry program required and replacing the existing installations at each of the pumping stations.

Whilst Newpower Nelson is a specialist in telemetry, pump station and switchboard design-build work, the team is also an accredited facilitator for Qtech DATRAN software and hardware systems, which helped Newpower to secure this contract
